Beverly Farms, a village on the Massachusetts North Shore within the town of Beverly, was in 1886 a place of two overlapping lives. Beverly's older economy rested on shoemaking, fishing, and the harbor, and the town's factories and wharves sat a short distance from the village. Beverly Farms itself had become a retreat for Boston families, who by then had built large summer houses along the shore and reached them by the railroad that ran up the coast toward Gloucester. The village's residents at the time would have known it as a quiet seaside summer colony, with its daily rhythm set by the trains, the tides, and the seasonal arrival of wealthy visitors.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Beverly Farms, Massachusetts, drawn in 1886. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
