In 1886, Amherst, Massachusetts, was a small college and farming town in the Connecticut River valley, with Amherst College on one side and the Massachusetts Agricultural College on the other, both shaping the town's social and civic life. Its economy rested on local farms, shops, and the trade that moved through the valley, while the colleges drew students, faculty, and visitors who gave the streets a scholarly character. Town life that year was tied to its churches, its schools, and the familiar houses along the main roads. The poet Emily Dickinson had lived in the town her whole life and died there in May 1886, a loss her neighbors would have felt in the community. A map of this kind shows each house and lot as residents knew them, so it records a place still organized around its colleges, its farms, and its close-knit streets.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Amherst, Massachusetts, drawn in 1886. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
