Sharp Mountain, the ridge that overlooks the town, provided the elevated vantage for this view of Pottsville, the seat of Schuylkill County in east-central Pennsylvania. Pottsville grew quickly after anthracite was mined in the surrounding hills, and by the mid-nineteenth century its streets, churches, canal and railroad links made it a center of the coal trade. Panoramic views like this one were popular in that period, offering a wide, bird's-eye record of a booming industrial community set against the wooded slopes of the mountain.
