Drawn in perspective, this view shows the whole of Gettysburg National Military Park as a single scene, with its rolling fields, ridges, and roads laid out for the viewer. The ground it depicts is where Union and Confederate armies fought from July 1 to 3, 1863, a battle that turned the Civil War's course in the East. The park was established in 1895, and by 1953 the National Park Service managed it and issued brochures like this one to guide visitors across the battlefield. The artist's challenge was to make a sprawling, hilly site readable at a glance for people who had never walked it.
