Three women from very different public lives appear together in this portrait, which the Harris & Ewing studio made in Washington around 1939. Alice Roosevelt Longworth, Theodore Roosevelt's daughter and the wife of House Speaker Nicholas Longworth, was a well-known figure in capital society, while Dorothy Thompson was a journalist whose columns made her one of the most prominent critics of Nazi Germany and who was expelled from Berlin in 1934. The record breaks off after "Mrs," so the third sitter is not identified here. Harris & Ewing, founded in Washington in 1905, photographed generations of officials and society figures.
