The name on this glass negative is Maurel, a title the Library of Congress notes was taken from unverified caption data supplied by the Bain News Service. The most likely subject is Victor Maurel, the French baritone who sang at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and was a prominent figure in the opera world of the period. Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, worked largely with glass plates, and the Bain collection is valued for documenting the faces and events of the early twentieth century, even where individual records are incomplete.
