Two gnomes lie asleep in the shade of fly agaric mushrooms, their red caps spotted white, while beetles drift in the air above them. The scene belongs to the folklore of small woodland beings that grew popular in European illustration during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when artists drew on fairy tales and nature study alike. Fly agaric, with its bright cap and long association with forest lore, gives the picture its woodland mood. It is worth noticing how the artist treats the insects and fungi with the same care as the figures, turning a quiet midday nap into a small, enchanted world.
