The poster ties American defense to British aircraft and asks viewers to contribute, which sets it apart from many wartime appeals that focus only on troops or factories. It dates from 1940 or 1941, when the United States was still officially neutral but arguing over how much to help Britain against Germany. The slogan belongs to the Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies, a private group founded in 1940 by the Kansas editor William Allen White, which held that aiding Britain was the best protection for the country. Its rival, America First, opposed that position, and the debate was largely settled by the Lend-Lease Act of March 1941.
