The flags and draped cloth framing a portrait in this arched alcove recall the presidential box at Ford's theater in Washington, which was hung with bunting and a flag for the evening of April 14, 1865. That night, President Abraham Lincoln attended a performance there, and he was shot in the box by John Wilkes Booth. The building was not used as a working theater for roughly a century afterward, and it reopened as a playhouse in 1968. Today it is a National Park Service site, and the decorations give a sense of how the space looked to its audience.
