This 1895 map shows Providence, Rhode Island, at the end of the nineteenth century, when the city was one of New England's busiest manufacturing centers. Its harbor sits where the Woonasquatucket and Moshassuck rivers meet, and by then the surrounding hills were crowded with mills, rail yards and worker housing, with jewelry and textile production driving much of that growth. Maps of this kind were often used to track streets, waterfront lots and industrial sites, so the fine detail of blocks and rail lines is worth a close look.
