This 1879 bird's-eye view presents Watertown, a town along the Charles River just west of Boston, as a panoramic drawing seen from an imagined height above its streets, rooftops, and river. Views like this were commercial productions of the late nineteenth century, when local residents and businesses often paid to have their property drawn in detail. Watertown was home to the Perkins Institution for the Blind and the federal Watertown Arsenal, so the map offers a useful record of the town's institutions and built landscape at a time of rapid growth in the Boston area.
