The National Capitol Brewery is the subject of this glass negative, whose title comes from notes the National Photo Company wrote on its sleeve, so the name is useful but unverified. The Washington, D.C., firm recorded businesses, streets and civic life across the early twentieth century, and this plate likely dates from between 1910 and 1926, when the brewing trade faced growing temperance pressure and, from 1920, national Prohibition. The record also notes streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the glass coatings, which affect the fine detail and are worth keeping in mind when reading the image.
