Unlike the photographs around it, this is a color poster promoting the Boston Sunday Herald's Easter issue, dated in its record only as sometime in the 1890s. Late nineteenth-century newspapers often used bright printed posters on street corners and fences to sell single editions, and a holiday number like an Easter edition was a natural occasion for seasonal color. Boston was then a crowded and competitive newspaper town, so papers fought for readers in the streets as well as in their pages. The poster is a reminder that everyday advertising of the period could be as lively as the news it announced.
