Four nooses hang over the scaffold in this walled yard, set up at the Old Penitentiary on the Washington Arsenal grounds for the July 7, 1865, executions of four people convicted of conspiring with John Wilkes Booth in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theater. The condemned were Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell, David Herold and George Atzerodt, and Surratt was the first woman executed by the federal government. Stereo cards like this one were made and sold in large numbers, so they show how the public followed the aftermath of the assassination.
