Two costumed figures, a pirate and a witch, pair up here in a pairing that has long been a favorite of Halloween dress-up. Both characters draw on older folklore and adventure stories that were reshaped for children and parties in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when home costume parties and neighborhood masquerades became common in America. Costumes of this kind were often homemade, assembled from hats, capes, painted faces and whatever clothing a family had on hand. Images like this one show how the holiday moved from its older customs toward the costumed, playful version still familiar today.
