Salisbury, North Carolina, was a railroad town, and its Confederate prison stood in a former cotton factory near the tracks that carried troops and supplies across the state. Union soldiers were held there from 1861 until the end of the war, and conditions grew especially grim during the overcrowded winter of 1864 and 1865. Photographs of the site are rare, so views like this one help show a place that is remembered mostly through prisoners' letters and later testimony.
