A jack-o'-lantern face stares out from the middle of this Hallowe'en greeting card, its grinning mouth set off by a knife, fork and spoon tucked around its edges, a playful pairing of harvest-season carving with the everyday kitchen. Holiday postcards of this kind became popular in the early twentieth century, when printers turned out large runs of cheerful seasonal cards for families to send to friends and relatives. Such designs often mixed autumn produce, black cats and witches with household objects, and their bright colors and whimsical motifs reflect how Hallowe'en was then becoming a festive occasion centered on home and fun rather than only folk custom.
