A jack-o'-lantern-style candle glows at the center of this Hallowe'en greeting postcard, the kind of small printed card people mailed to friends and family in the early 1900s. Halloween postcards from that era, often called "golden age" postcards, were produced in large numbers by American and European printers, and they typically paired bright chromolithographed color with motifs such as pumpkins, black cats, witches, and harvest imagery. Candles were a common device because their flicker suggested the lamp-lit, spooky evenings of the season. Notice how the colors and embossed borders were meant to make a simple holiday note feel special.
