Ceremonies like this one, held at the start of a new season, typically honored the previous year's pennant winners, and the New York Giants had won the National League pennant in 1922. The glass negative, made on April 26, 1923, comes from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose pictures documented news and sports in the early twentieth century. The title is taken from the agency's own notes and has not been independently verified, so the exact occasion is best read as a team flag-raising in spring 1923. Its glass-plate format also reflects the photographic practice of the period, before roll film became common for press work.
