The title names a place called St. Valentine on the Danube, and the saint's name is the only link this view has to the board's theme. The lake and the Ortler group of Tyrol in the title are the other landmarks the caption points to. Photochrom prints like this one were made by a Swiss process from the late 1880s, in which a photographic negative was transferred to several stone lithographic plates, each inked in a different color and hand-retouched to resemble a painting. The Detroit Publishing Company distributed such views in the United States as a record of Austria-Hungary's scenery, and this copy is listed in its 1905 catalog.
