Winged angels and a dish of ice cream share this Currier & Ives lithograph, whose punning title, "The cream of love," signals its playful sentiment. The New York firm produced inexpensive prints for a wide public, and this one dates from about 1879, when ice cream was becoming a common treat sold by confectioners and at soda fountains rather than a dessert reserved for wealthy households. The print is cataloged in Gale's Currier & Ives catalog raisonné as number 1423, which makes it easy to compare with the firm's other work of the period.
