This glass negative is labeled as the French violinist Jacques Thibaud with his instrument, though the record notes that the identification comes from caption information the Bain News Service wrote on its negatives and has not been independently verified. Thibaud, born in 1880, was one of the leading violinists of the early twentieth century, and he formed a well-known piano trio with Alfred Cortot and Pablo Casals. The Bain agency, a New York photo service active from about 1900 into the early 1930s, supplied portraits of performers, public figures, and news events to newspapers, so a picture like this was likely made for press use. The record gives no date, so the sitting is best placed within that broader period.
