Mother's Day fell on May 10 in 1925, and this glass negative shows how the holiday was observed at Arlington, the national cemetery across the Potomac from Washington. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital in the 1910s and 1920s, made the picture. Its title is unverified, so the caption rests on the studio's own notation and a related negative's date. President Woodrow Wilson had made Mother's Day a national observance in 1914, and many families marked it by visiting graves. The streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of the original coating, not from the scene itself.
