This page sets six separate illustrations of reapers and threshers together, so the viewer can compare how different harvesting machines worked. Reapers cut the standing grain, while threshers separated the kernels from the stalks and chaff, and for much of the nineteenth century these were distinct machines that often moved from farm to farm in crews. The combine, which joined both tasks in one machine, grew out of these earlier designs, and a page like this shows the mechanical steps that led to it.
