This picture shows Joseph Keppler himself, the founder of *Puck*, as the returning prodigal, with his office staff gathered to greet him. The title borrows from the biblical parable of the prodigal son, and the record ties the image to both Keppler's journeys and the homecoming theme. Keppler, an Austrian-born illustrator, started the humor weekly in New York in the 1870s and made it one of the best-known satirical magazines of its day. Its large color spreads, like this one in the October 10, 1883 issue, were a major draw for readers.
