Few WWI posters tie a vegetable patch to the battlefield as directly as this one, borrowing the phrase soldiers used for going over the parapet. During the First World War, governments on both sides asked civilians to grow their own food so that commercial harvests could go to troops and allies. In the United States, the call for war gardens, later known as Victory Gardens, reached backyards and city lots, and posters like this one made growing food feel like a personal form of service. Its place on a fruit and vegetable board reflects how closely produce imagery was tied to the war effort.
