Locomotive No. 146 is distinguished by its attached smoke-consuming device, built under a patent held by Gill and Grier. Such designs aimed to cut the heavy black smoke that engines of the 1860s poured over towns, stations, and passengers. The title names the Pennsylvania Railroad, one of the largest carriers of the period, so the card shows a working engine rather than a posed studio subject. The catalog also links the card to Abraham Lincoln and the Soldiers' Home in Washington, D.C., a pairing the record does not explain. The card belongs to the Charles F. Himes collection of stereographs made by amateur photographers.
