Roosevelt is shown from the head and shoulders, turned slightly to his left, a common angle for formal portraits of the period. The picture was registered for copyright on December 27, 1933, when Roosevelt was in his first year as president and the New Deal's early emergency programs were dominating national news. The portrait was made by Elias Goldensky, a Washington photographer, and its copyright registration, with no later renewal, is recorded in the Library of Congress file. Such images circulated widely in newspapers and government offices during the 1930s, when a president's likeness was reproduced constantly.
