The Moline Universal name points to a tractor built by the Moline Plow Company of Moline, Illinois, a firm known for farm implements long before it made engines. Its row-crop design let a farmer cultivate between rows of corn and other crops, which mattered as tractors began to replace teams of horses and mules on American farms in the early 1900s. Advertisements like this one were a main way manufacturers introduced such machines to farmers, so the piece also shows how companies pitched mechanization as a practical step for working land.
