Souderton, a borough in Montgomery County in southeastern Pennsylvania, was a farm trade center in 1894, serving the surrounding Mennonite and German-speaking farm families of the upper Perkiomen valley. Its economy rested on agriculture, along with the small shops, mills, and local businesses that handled grain, produce, and dairy goods moving through the village. The country was in the grip of the Panic of 1893, and many residents of towns like this one felt the slump in lower wages, slow sales, and worried bank accounts. Souderton had been incorporated as a borough only in the late 1880s, so the map captures a community still settling into its new civic life, with churches, schools, and streets that its residents would have recognized as the heart of their home.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Souderton, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1894. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
