Eight cotton bales, with remedies set above them as if crowned, is an unusual pairing, and the title suggests a picture meant to tie a commodity to the medicines of its day. Nineteenth-century trade cards and advertising prints often used such allegorical arrangements to promote patent medicines and tonics alongside everyday goods. Cotton was one of the great commercial staples of the American South and the textile trade, so a scene built around it invites questions about who made the picture and for which market. Lettering and any printer's or maker's marks are the best clues to its date and purpose.
