A page of miscellaneous newspaper advertisements, the kind that once filled the back pages of American dailies, is an unlikely candidate for a bicycle gallery, yet its bicycle notice is what places it here. Among the corset and tobacco pitches, the bicycle entry reflects the late nineteenth-century craze for the wheel, when the "safety" bicycle with two equal-sized wheels replaced the high-wheeled penny-farthing and drew a wide new market of riders. Such pages are worth studying for how casually they mix products, showing that cycling was being sold alongside everyday goods rather than set apart as a luxury.
