A young newsboy stands beside his delivery bicycle, its front basket stacked with papers, on what looks like an ordinary city street. Bicycles became a common tool for newspaper carriers in the early twentieth century, when a rider could cover a route far faster on foot and carry a heavy bundle of editions in a wire or wicker basket. Many of these boys were teenagers working before or after school to help support their families, and the bicycle was often their most valuable possession.
