A railroad platform full of Russian soldiers is the particular subject here, though the record gives no place, date, or confirmed identity for the men or the station. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs, produced many images of this kind between about 1900 and the 1920s. Russian military personnel crossed North America by train during the First World War, so the scene may relate to that period, but the title is unverified and the negative itself does not settle the question. Its glass plate format was common for newsroom work of the time.
