Held in Fairmount Park in 1876, the Centennial Exposition marked the hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and drew around 10 million visitors to Philadelphia. Balloon ascents were among the fair's attractions, offering crowds a rare view over the grounds and the city. The picture shows how novel flight still felt to the public in the 1870s, only a little over a decade after balloons had been used for aerial observation during the Civil War.
