Philadelphia in 1876 was hosting the Centennial International Exhibition in Fairmount Park, held to mark one hundred years since the Declaration of Independence. Opened on May 10, the fair drew millions of visitors before closing in November, and local people knew it for its large iron and glass exhibition halls, especially Machinery Hall, where the great Corliss steam engine powered the displays. Visitors also saw Alexander Graham Bell's telephone that summer, as American industry was on display in a city whose mills, rail yards, and workshops made it a leading manufacturing center. For a city that had grown quickly after the Civil War, the exhibition was a source of civic pride, and the park it left behind would be improved for decades.
