Ashtabula, Ohio, in 1896 was a lake port on the Lake Erie shore, where the Ashtabula River meets the harbor and where iron ore arriving by ship from the upper Great Lakes was unloaded onto railcars bound for steel mills in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Several railroad lines crossed the town, and its docks, rail yards, and harbor shaped daily work for many residents. The town still carried the memory of the December 1876 disaster, when a railroad bridge over the river gave way under a passenger train and killed dozens of people, a tragedy that was discussed for decades afterward. The map's view of the streets, churches, and industrial waterfront would have been familiar to townspeople as the place where they worked, shipped goods, and kept their civic life.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Ashtabula, Ohio, drawn in 1896. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
