Printed for J.V. O'Connell's "Idle Hours" cigar brand, this label shows two gentlemen, a pairing of leisure and tobacco that the brand name itself suggests. Cigar makers in the late 1800s and early 1900s used colorful lithographed labels like this one to catch a buyer's eye on crowded shop shelves and inside cigar boxes, and scenes of well-dressed men at ease were a popular choice for selling a smoke as a mark of relaxed sociability. Because the label was meant to be seen briefly and then often discarded or kept as a keepsake, surviving examples are valuable today for their printing techniques and their picture of how commercial art presented manhood and recreation.
