Carthage, Missouri, the seat of Jasper County, was a county-seat town of several thousand people in 1891, and its fortunes were tied to the railroads and to the lead and zinc mining country to the west around Joplin. Local people in that decade still spoke of the Battle of Carthage, the July 1861 clash that was one of the first Civil War engagements fought in Missouri. The town's courthouse square, its churches and its brick business blocks made up the civic center, and farm trade from the surrounding countryside filled its stores on market days. Carthage was also known for its local limestone, which was quarried nearby and used as building stone. This 1891 view records the town as it stood at the height of that boom, with its streets, homes and commercial buildings set out block by block.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Carthage, Missouri, drawn in 1891. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
