Tionesta, the county seat of Forest County in northwestern Pennsylvania, sat where Tionesta Creek meets the Allegheny River, and in 1896 its fortunes still rose and fell with the surrounding forest. Lumbering dominated the region, and logs cut from the hills were floated down the Allegheny in rafts toward markets farther south. Hemlock bark, stripped from felled trees, supplied the tanneries that were common across the county, so the work of the woods reached the town's streets and docks at every season. Readers in 1896 would have known Tionesta as a river town built around its courthouse, its lumber trade, and the steady traffic of men returning from the timber camps.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Tionesta, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1896. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
