The record identifies its subject only as "Emperor Friedrich," a title the Library of Congress notes is unverified and taken from the Bain News Service's own negative or caption card. If it refers to Friedrich III of Germany, the reign was famously brief: he ruled for 99 days in 1888 before dying of throat cancer, and his death left his son Wilhelm II to take the throne. The Bain News Service, which supplied news pictures to newspapers in New York and beyond in the early twentieth century, often labeled its negatives loosely, so the identification should be read with that caution in mind.
