Gettysburg, the county seat of Adams County in south-central Pennsylvania, became the site of the largest battle of the Civil War when the Union and Confederate armies met there from July 1 to 3, 1863. The town's streets, farms and ridges were reshaped by that fighting, and the surrounding battlefield later became a national military park. This picture's record offers little detail about the exact scene, so it is best read as part of the broader photographic record of a place that drew visitors within a generation of the battle. Lincoln's Address at the dedication of the soldiers' national cemetery in November 1863 gave the town a lasting place in American memory.
