The Forget-Me-Not Fairy takes its name from the small blue flower whose name, in English and German, comes from a legend of a knight who fell into a river while picking one for his lady and called out to be remembered. The flower became a common emblem of remembrance in the 19th century, when the language of flowers was popular and sentimental fairy pictures were widely printed. Images like this one drew on that tradition, mixing folk belief about fairies with the period's taste for botanical detail and gentle moral sentiment. Look at how the figure and the blossoms are arranged, since that is where the picture's message about memory is usually carried.
