A fisherman in a cap holds up a large striped bass, its silver body and dark horizontal stripes plainly visible, as if to show a buyer its size. Market scenes like this one were common along American coastal towns through the late 1800s and early 1900s, when fish were sold fresh from the boat or wagon and the weight and length of a catch served as a sign of its quality. The striped bass, prized on both the Atlantic seaboard and in the Chesapeake, was a staple of those markets. Look closely at the man's hands and the way he grips the fish, which tell you as much about the work of selling a day's catch as the fish itself does.
