Seen from above, this 1870 print presents the Empire Sewing Machine Company as a whole complex, with its buildings, grounds and surroundings laid out in one panorama. Bird's eye views like this were popular from the 1850s through the 1880s, when businesses commissioned them as detailed portraits of their premises. The lithography was done by Henry Seibert & Bros., a New York firm that produced commercial prints in quantity. The high vantage point lets viewers study the layout of the works in a way a ground-level sketch could not.
