One central portrait sits inside an oval frame, ringed by a crowd of smaller head-and-shoulders likenesses. Makers of composite portraits favored this layout in the decades around the Civil War. Such pieces were often assembled to honor a leader and the men who worked beside or under him, and they were sold to a public eager to see the faces of people shaping national events. The record does not name the surrounding men, so the sheet is best read as a group study of the period's political and military circles. The central face anchors the arrangement, a visual cue about rank that was common in printed tributes of the time.
