Tallahassee, Florida, in 1885 was a small inland city set on red clay hills, well away from the coast, and it had been the seat of state government since 1824, when it was chosen as a compromise between St. Augustine and Pensacola. Cotton and the farms of Leon County supplied its merchants, and a rail line ran south to the port at St. Marks, which carried goods to and from the Gulf. Around the state capitol stood churches, law offices, and stores that served planters who rode in from the countryside on market days. Residents knew it as a quiet government town and a trading center for cotton country, still adjusting to the years after Reconstruction ended in 1877. The streets and houses drawn here show how compactly that community was laid out.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Tallahassee, Florida, drawn in 1885. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
