The only identification for this glass negative is the name J.W. Shorthill, taken from the negative or its caption card, and the Library of Congress notes that the title has not been verified. The record gives no date, so the sitter's role and the occasion behind the portrait remain unknown. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Glass plates of this size were a standard medium for press photographers of that period, and the collection is valued for documenting everyday people and public life as well as major events.
