Here the subject is a pitcher's arm, with the slogan "That arm - your country needs it" turning a ballplayer's throwing arm into a call to wartime service. Vojtech Preissig, a Czech-born artist working in America, made the design in 1918, the last full year of the First World War. That summer the federal government pressed men of military age to work or fight, and Major League Baseball shortened its 1918 season and ended it on Labor Day. Posters like this one tied the national game to the war effort, asking players and fans alike to put their skills to use for the country.
