A winged fairy stands atop a gull, with a rough sea churning below, a pairing that turns the usual image of a delicate sprite on a flower into something wilder and more elemental. Images like this grew out of the Victorian and late nineteenth-century fascination with fairy painting, when artists drew on folklore and romantic nature imagery to imagine spirits living in landscapes and weather. The gull, a creature of coasts and storms, lets the artist tie the fairy to the sea itself, so the figure reads as a guardian or messenger of the tempest rather than a dainty garden spirit. Its placement under the religious and angelic heading reflects how often such winged figures blurred the line between heavenly beings and folklore fairies.
